Panel System themeing for new Italian amusement park

Brescia, Italy-based Panel System has provided the themeing for two of the attractions at the newly opened Rainbow MagicLand amusement park just outside Rome.

Working from a brief provided by MagicLand, Panel System realised all the theming around the park's Mine Train ride.

This involved building the steel structure; covering it with sprayed cement; hand-carving and moulding onto the frame of the volcanoes; and finally painting and producing the lava effect. The latter was achieved with transparent and pigmented resins, which were backlit.

Panel System also built the station and the Flying Dutchman vessel.

Elsewhere in the park, the company created the detailed façade of the Theatre.

Panel System's Matteo Bastoni said: "Considering the short schedule, this was a real challenge.

"All the architectural and decorative elements were hand carved, stiffened and then reproduced using moulds.

"We took great care to ensure that we achieved really beautiful paint effects, for example using gold leaf and gemstones for the decoration of the masks."

Rainbow MagicLand opened on 26 May 2011 and covers an area of 600,000sq m/148acres. It has been developed by Alfa Park to compete with the main European amusement parks.
